Hi Friend,Who would have thought NZ would be counted amongst the pro-whaling nations but, believe it or not, that is now on the cards. Take action here.
We stand to lose something very precious here.
New Zealand's character has been forged on our strong conservation values. We've stood up to the USA and said no to nuclear ships. We've promoted peace instead of war. Our clean, green reputation is not just an international selling point - it's a reflection of how we see ourselves.
Some things are part of our identity, and no change of government is going to shift them. New Zealand is nuclear free. We protect our national parks. And we save whales.
NZ has a reputation as one of the staunchest defenders of whale conservation. So, like many of you I'm sure, I was utterly stunned when the Government announced its support for a plan that could see the resumption and legitimisation of commercial whaling.
Tell John Key that NZ must vote against any deal which would endorse a return to commercial whaling, and should support Australia's proposal to end whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.
NZ's environmental values seem to be under increasing attack. First mining in our national parks and now supporting a return to whaling. What's next on the list? Nuclear ships in our harbours?
- Nick Young
PS. To make matters worse the Australia is making us look even worse by standing firm and taking the sort of no nonsense stance we once credited with being typically Kiwi. It says whaling in the Southern Ocean must stop within five years. It's also threatening to take Japan to the International Court of Justice to force the issue if diplomacy fails. Send John Key a message here.
